Chevy Volt Wins European Car of the Year at Geneva Auto Show 2012

2012 Chevrolet Volt

Earlier this year we learned that Chevy was launching a new Cruze Hatchback strictly for the European market and planned to premiere it at the annual International Geneva Motor Show.  What we didn’t know was that another vehicle, the Chevy Volt, was going to win European Car of the Year!  Not that we don’t endorse our own products but wining this title validates that our opinion about the electric car isn’t being brand loyal but that the vehicle itself is outstanding.

Since its first show in 1905, the International Geneva Motor Show is an annual auto show held every march in Geneva, Switzerland showcasing all of history’s major international internal combustion engine models ever created.  So, it’s pretty much a big deal.

GM’s success overseas is partially due to the fact that native competitors are struggling to compete against other dealers like Chevrolet and Ford.  Also, launching new hatchbacks, Europe’s favorite car, is earning GM a lot of kudos.

ABOUT THE CHEVY VOLT

What is a volt?
The Chevy Volt is a full–performance electric vehicle with extended range that’s very unique among all other electric vehicles because it runs on two different sources of energy. There’s an electric source–a battery–that enables you to drive gas–free for an EPA–estimated 35 miles. Then there's an onboard gas generator that produces electricity so you can go up to a total of 375 miles on a full tank of gas. Crazy.  This is why the Volt can’t be classified as just an electric car nor can it be considered a “hybrid.”  It’s so innovative with new technology that it’s its own category.

How does it work?
The Volt plugs into any standard 120 V household outlet.  The lithium-ion battery is stored onboard the vehicle and powers the electric drive unit, which speeds and accelerates the car and allows you to drive an initial range without even using a single drop of gas.  Talk about fuel economy.  Once that initial electric range has been used up, then the gas engine kicks in and powers the electric motors to keep your vehicle going so you keep driving, whether it be near or far, efficiently.

How often do I charge the battery?
Charging the battery varies by your own schedule.  You could charge it every day, weekly, or even monthly depending on how often you drive the vehicle.

There’s so much more one can say about the new Chevy Volt but this blog post needs to end some how.  Needless to say, there is so much potential with this new technology that’s applicable to so many different processes in life.  We’re excited to see where it goes from here and can already see a brighter future.
